Photographer and Conceptual Artist   |   Digital and Analog   |   Rotterdam & Milan

I am Marta Stefani, a (currently) Rotterdam based photographer from Italy.

Raised a classical student in the hinterland of Milan, I often include and explore my background in my work; I am passionate and feel close to subjects of (de)industrial areas, semi-countryside and the exploration of the urban space.

Whether or not I get away from these themes, at the centre of my work there is always the theme of human connection and the way it relates with the acts of searching and remembering. For example, exploring how the images that are used to represent a space can connect with the politics of collective memory.

I love to collect images, and I am interested in the relationship between series, often including many pictures in my work. People communicate, learn and exist through and side by side with a gigantic stream of pictures, and I feel that it’s difficult for an image to just exist alone, without a net of others around it, so in my practice I try to rebuild these structures on a smaller scale.

I am also fascinated by the physical aspect of my work, giving particular attention to the form with which is presented, making it part of the work itself. For example, working the images in a blanket or trying to create a point of interaction with audience, by printing them as stickers and creating a game.

In my work I use both archival pictures, with an attention to “fast consumption” images (for example fliers, advertisement images), and images created specifically for the project. I like to work both with analogue and digital and I generally operate outside of the studio.
